Super Mario 64, (released in June 23, 1996) is an 3D platformer developed by Nintendo and a launch title for the Nintendo 64. Being the first 3D Mario game, it is based on open-world playability, degrees of freedom through all three axes in space, and relatively large areas which are composed primarily of true 3D polygons as opposed to only two-dimensional (2D) sprites. It places an emphasis on exploration within vast worlds that require the player to complete various missions, in addition to the occasional linear obstacle courses as in traditional platform games. While doing so, it still preserves many gameplay elements and characters of earlier Mario games, and the same visual style. The plot involves Mario having to defeat Bowser, who had trapped Princess Peach and her Toad retainers inside the castle's walls and took most of the collectible 120 Power Stars.

The game received critical acclaim upon release, praised for its ambition, visuals, gameplay, and music, but criticized for its bad camera. It sold over 11 million copies as of 2017, making it the Nintendo 64's bestseller. It was also re-released for both the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console emulations, as well as an included game on both the 2020 compilation Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the Nintendo 64 Online for Nintendo Switch, under Nintendo Switch Online Membership.

This also led to many YouTubers making animated series about it, leading to SMG4's high rise to popularity.

Development[]

Producer/director and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto conceived a 3D Mario game during the production of Star Fox (1993). Super Mario 64's development, handled by Nintendo EAD, lasted approximately three years; one was spent on designing while the next two on direct work. The visuals were created using the Nichimen N-World toolkit and Miyamoto aimed to include more details than earlier games.

Remake[]

A remake of the game titled Super Mario 64 DS was released in 2004 for the Nintendo DS, being the system's first Mario game. It added Luigi (who was supposed to appear in the original game, but was "asked to leave" due to technical limitations), Wario, and Yoshi as playable characters. It added 30 hidden stars to the game, making the total counter 150.

On September 18, 2020, Super Mario 64 was included as one of the games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars. The game was on sale for a price of $60 (USD) for a limited time until March 31, 2021, when the game was pulled from the Nintendo eShop and production of physical copies stopped.

The game was rereleased on the Nintendo Switch again for the Nintendo 64 Online Membership on Switch Online.

Reception[]

Super Mario 64 received critical acclaim from critics and fans, and is still highly praised today, garnering thousands of Game of the Year awards and receiving a Metacritic score of 94. The DS remake also received positive reviews, but was criticized for its multiplayer mode and lack of analog controls, receiving a Metacritic score of 85.

Like most SM64 machinimists at the time, Luke originally dubbed his series as Super Mario 64 Bloopers (SM64 Bloopers, for short) but had to change it to the current "SMG4" style due to YouTube's recently updated and much more strict copyright policies. The game itself has appeared in a number of videos throughout the series' run; likely some of the more notable examples would be SM64: The Mario Parable, SM64: Mario in Real Life!? and SMG4: If Mario Was In Meta Runner.

SM64: War of the Fat Italians 2015 (600k Special)[]

Bowser is briefly seen in the final battle area where Mario fights him before he gets his butt kicked by Mario.

SM64: War Of The Fat Italians 2016 (900k Special)[]

One of Bowser's lines in the rap battle references the part where Mario has to throw Bowser away to a bomb in Super Mario 64.

The Mario Channel: MARIOBUSTERS[]

One of Mario's challenges is to slap the whole world's butts in 10 seconds, which Mario manages to successfully do and finishes with Bowser, whose butt-spank causes him to be sent flying to one of the bombs in the final battle area of Super Mario 64, referencing the game.

SMG4: If Mario Was In Meta Runner[]

It replaces Ultra Jump Mania in this abridged parody. Just like in the original series, Mario (in place of Theo in this case) accidentally gets warped out of the game cartridge, and he "dies" in the end because Bob (as Lucks) destroys it. Thankfully, the events of this video turn out to be a dream Tari had the night before.

SMG4: SMG4 🅴🆇🅿🅰🅽🅳🆂 His Brain[]

One of the games featured in the video is SUFFER MORE, which is based on the screen title level of Super Mario 64 (although it uses Mario's modern face rather than his SM64 face). The objective of the game is to torture Mario as much as possible by twisting his face as much as possible, which is a reference to the fact that if you hold the R button while messing with Mario's face, it will become static. Resulting in some really weird expressions.

SMG4: Nintendo Gets Deleted[]

When Solid Snake and Bowser are surrounded by the enemy soldiers, Snake swings and throws Bowser in a similar way to Mario whenever he fights Bowser in Super Mario 64. It is also a reference to the "So Long Gay Bowser" meme.

SMG4: SMG4's Origins & SMG4: The Other Universe[]

SMG4's flashback takes place right after the events of the game. Mario expresses relief over Bowser's defeat and that the power of the Power Stars were restored to the castle, and Peach tells Mario that she hopes that nothing changes. After SMG4's USB crash lands near Peach's Castle, all the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom became corrupted, Mario himself became an extremely idiotic, unstable guy and addicted to/madly in love with spaghetti. He proceeded to throw Peach into the sky, who eventually adapted to Mario's antics/became corrupted from SMG4's USB, causing her to become the bossy and nagging princess we've come to know. A later flashback in The Other Universe reveals that the SMG4 universe is actually a ROM file of Super Mario 64 run on an emulator and modified by the power of memes brought by the Guardian Pods.

SMG4 Movie: 10 Year Anniversary Special[]

In the movie, Eldritch SMG0 (Niles fused with the real SMG0) managed to kidnap several Mario Recolors and drain their life forces, causing them to turn into eyeless and soulless recolored versions of Mario's model in Super Mario 64 that served as his temporary minions. Mario himself nearly became one of them, but was saved by his friends and SMG1 and SMG2.

SMG4: If Mario Was In... Anime[]

Princess Peach indirectly references Super Mario 64 when she yells at Mario "WHY DID I EVEN BAKE YOU A CAKE 24 YEARS AGO?" for being "too slow" to save her from Bowser again, referencing the beginning of the game when she invites Mario over to have cake. However, Super Mario 64 came out in 1996, so that likely means that, despite the game being released in 1996, the game ingame takes place in 1997, since this blooper aired in 2021.

SMG4: THE 5,000,000 SUB SPECIAL[]

During the Stupid Mario Odyssey segment, right before being launched by Bowser's hat, Mario calls Bowser gay, referencing the So Long Gay Bowser! meme associated with Super Mario 64.

SMG4 Movie: IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT[]

This movie takes place in Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64 which is soon permanently destroyed due to falling to Demonic Goop.
