The Mushroom Kingdom (briefly Kingdom of Mario Land in SMG4: Mario The Supreme Leader) is a sovereign state - a principality ruled by the Toadstool dynasty, which is almost always the main setting where SMG4 series take place, located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. There are many different species that reside in the kingdom including Toads (the majority), humans, Goombas, Koopas and Teletubbies. The members of SMG4's Gang also live there, with the sole exception of Tari. Following the destruction of Peach's Castle and the fate of the princess, it is unknown if she is in position of power.

Overview[]

Geography[]

The Mushroom Kingdom is a country where most of the Mario games take place. The geography of the country varies, from green plains, jungles, deserts, snowy lands and volcanic areas. In the series, it is shown to be very mountainous, and it is also a fact that it sits in a rift in one of the tectonic plates in the Atlantic Ocean, possibly at the tripoint of the North American, African and Eurasian plates, therefore forming mountains such as Mount Shiver (in SMG4: Little Penguin Lost) and Mount Doom (in SMG4: Mario Scratches His Ass). To the south of the mainland lies the Wuhu Archipelago, a resort destination. Meanwhile, Isle Delfino, an autonomous territory of the kingdom, lies in the Pacific Ocean, thereby the only territory not to be located within the Mushroom Kingdom's borders in the Atlantic.

From evidence in the series, it is shown that the green plains is where most of the citizens live and where the desert is the most inhospitable places to live, with only a few people living there and due to high radioactivity in the region due to an amount of nuclear test sites being located there.

The capital of the kingdom is called Mushroom City. Meanwhile, the official currency in the kingdom is the Mushroom dollar, which uses Mushroom coins. All vehicles in the kingdom drive on the right side on the road, with the steering wheel on each car on the left side. However, it is shown in some videos that vehicles would drive on the left side of the road (much like its seen in countries such as in Australia, Britain, and Japan), probably due to the series being made in Australia, where cars drive on the left side. Still, steering wheels are located on the left, but in later videos the kingdom has completely switched to left-hand traffic.

The kingdom is shown to be very racially diverse, with the population comprising Toads, humans, Koopas, Teletubbies, Goombas and more. Meanwhile, the human population in the Mushroom Kingdom is mostly comprised of Italian immigrants, who emigrated from Italy in the past, evidence in people like Mario and Luigi. The Mushroom Kingdom is seen as an opposite to its neighbor Inkopolis as it is shown to be anti-discriminatory towards people of other races, unlike Inkopolis, due to having a homogenous population of Inklings.

Government[]

(see Mushroom Kingdom Government for more)

The Toadstool family is the ruling dynasty over the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, with the current ruler being Peach Toadstool, the princess of the kingdom, taking over the role from her unseen father, the Mushroom King. She resides at her official residence, which is her castle located north of the capital. While the monarch is the head of state of the kingdom, most of the power in the country is handled by the President of the Mushroom Kingdom, who is the head of government and the monarch's adviser, as seen in Super Mario 64 Bloopers: President Toad Washington. This is unusual since the head of government in a monarchial state is usually called the Prime Minister. (Although it should be noted that in SMG4: Mario The Supreme Leader, Mario is referred to as the Prime Minister a few times.)

History[]

In the early years, the land known as the Mushroom Kingdom was sparsely inhabited, with just few inhabitants living on the land for decades, with some Toads, Koopas and Goombas living there, and spoke their own languages (with Toads speaking their Toad language). It wasn't until human pilgrims from Western Europe came here, and tried to live off the land, but however were threatened, that was until the natives came to their help and they managed to survive in the new land they were now living in, as told in a non-Bob version of the story in SMG4: Mario and the Bob Mansion....

Currently, the kingdom suggested to have flawed human rights records, particularly on the criticism of the monarchy due to the lèse-majesté laws in place, showing that the country is somewhat not that democratic and free, shown in SMG4: Mario Is Cancelled.

In SMG4: Mario The Supreme Leader, a castle patron, Mario, took the role as the acting King of the Mushroom Kingdom after accidentally having his pet rock wizard sending away the regent, Toadsworth. Assuming his role, he became the first ever monarch to not come from the Toadstool dynasty, and quickly became an efficient leader despite not having any experience in politics. He became power-hungry, effectively cracking down on dissent, and turning the country into a totalitarian state, making himself the Supreme Leader of Mario Land. After a failed revolution, he was forced to be stripped of his role after Peach returned from her holiday, and took back the crown, restoring the Mushroom Kingdom's democracy.

There was once a time where everyone in the kingdom was sane. However, the day that SMG4 was arrived in the kingdom, everyone became extremely stupid, most notably Mario.

Languages[]

Due to the massive immigrant and native population staying together on the land, a need for a bridge of communication was necessary, so it stuck with English as the official language of the kingdom. However, the native species remained to speak their own languages, such as Toad, Goomba and Koopa. Nevertheless, foreign languages are continued to be spoken by citizens, such as Italian, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic and recently Inkling.

Economy[]

Main article: Coins

The Mushroom Kingdom in the series is shown to be a highly developed country due to its position in the Atlantic Ocean, establishing itself as a supply station and a rest area for ships and travelers travelling between Europe and the United States during past times.

The kingdom is shown to have a mixed economy; while it has a liberalized free market system that allowed foreign businesses such as McDonald's, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony to operate in, there are some state-owned enterprises, such as MKTV, the National Bank, the Mushroom Kingdom Paint Transfer Company and the Mushroom Kingdom Post Office, with a myriad of local businesses such as Moo Moo Milk and Chungus Games as examples.

The official currency is the Mushroom dollar, using coins (1 coin = 0.016 USD / 0.01065049 AUD). The kingdom's main revenue appears to be from shipping, thanks in part from its strategic location in the middle of Europe and North America. Toad Harbor, near Mushroom City, the main economic center of the kingdom, acts as a major sea gateway for the whole country, importing and exporting goods such as paint and fruits. Other main industries include finance, food and beverages and tourism.

Transport[]

The Mushroom Kingdom is served by a multitude of modes of transport. Highways are straddled throughout the country, diverging from Mushroom City. The kingdom is also shown to have railways, established since colonial times that is still used for passenger and cargo services, such as the Mushroom Mesa railway. Mushroom Metro Airport, located near Mushroom City, acts as the main aerial gateway to the kingdom, while Toad Harbor acts as a major terminal for sea cruises and shipping, such as plying the Mushroom City-Port Aurora route.

Demographics[]

The majority of the Mushroom Kingdom's population comprises of Toads, followed by the humans. The Koopas, who are the third largest ethnic group, mostly lives in the east, particularly in their ancestral homeland, Koopa Land. Other populations such as the Piantas live on Isle Delfino, while the Yoshi's form a majority on Dinosaur Land. Other minorities live in their respective provinces, such as the penguins in Shiver City.

Although not regularly shown in the series, the majority of the Mushroom Kingdom practices Christianity, with churches seen in many places. The Christians there are primarily Catholics and Protestants (and with other sects), with examples such as an abandoned cathedral in the Dark Web. It is implied that Mario and Luigi are Catholics because of their Italian ethnicity. Meanwhile, there are also populations that are secular, while there are still folk religions being practiced in the kingdom. Other minorities include Buddhists, Jews and Muslims.

Law enforcement[]

The Royal Mushroom Kingdom Police is the main law enforcement of the kingdom, and the country is defended by the Mushroom Kingdom Armed Forces.

It is unclear about the status of drugs in the country, but it is implied that mushrooms, the namesake of the kingdom, is legal. Marijuana is shown to be either decriminalized or legal too, while drugs like crack cocaine are banned.

Catastrophes[]

Throughout the series' timeline, the kingdom has been seen in much peril, such as being invaded by bootleg supremacists, two T-Pose pandemics, and pro-anime riots. Additionally, there was a timeline set 500 years in the future where sentient Weegee Dolls conquered the kingdom, which fortunately was undone by Luigi, Fishy Boopkins, Shroomy, and Mario's descendant New Super Duper Mario Plus Ultra.

In SMG4: Mario Runs Out Of Toilet Paper, Satan (disguised as the Papa John food mascot) decides to destroy the world and kill everyone just for the fun of it. To do so, he causes a toilet paper shortage in the kingdom. As its citizens depended on the paper, a panic-mass buying of toilet paper began, but thanks to SMG4's Gang, the plot ended.

Even with those catastrophes, the kingdom is able to rebuild every single time, probably due to its strong economy, hinting that it is a developed country. However, they have yet to recover from the biggest catastrophe of them all. Several years ago, not long after Mario defeated Bowser and restored the power of the Stars, a strange object landed in the kingdom, downloading memes into it and causing everyone to become stupid. Fortunately, SMG4 was able to slightly calm everyone down by making videos of them, and he's been living in the kingdom ever since.

Trivia[]

  • The Mushroom Kingdom's population is around 15 million people, since, at the beginning of SMG4: Mario and The Diss Track, the counter of Bob's fans is around that number, while Saiko said "everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom are already fans of him", although she could just be exaggerating. However, this is later shown to be true in SMG4: Meggy Moves In.
  • In the Nintendo counterpart, Bowser rules the Koopa Kingdom, but in SMG4's universe, he and all Koopas seem to live along with the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • The Mushroom Kingdom has been through numerous apocalyptic events and attacks; too many to even count, but notable events include:
    • The Anime Crisis.
    • Ztar’s Catastrophe.
    • The T-Pose Apocalypse (happened twice, the second time destroying most of the kingdom in the process, though it was later rebuilt).
    • The Minecraft Plague.
    • The Internet Drought.
    • The Spaghetti Apocalypse.
    • The Weegee Doll Invasion (happened twice, the second time resulting in the Luigi dolls taking over the kingdom).
    • The Shroob Invasion
    • The Blorb Apocalypse
    • Bowser's attempting takeover
    • The ruining of festivals and traditions
    • Niles/SMG0's attempt to delete it and the rest of the universe and replace it with his own universe (also tried to kill Mario in the 10 year anniversary special)
  • The Mushroom Kingdom may possibly be located at Europe and the Mediterranean Sea, according to SMG4: A Day In The Life Of Everyone. Its location is debated, possibly in a location similar to Malta, Corsica and Sardinia located in the Mediterranean Sea or off the coasts of Iberia and Western Africa, much like the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Further proof of the Mushroom Kingdom's location in Europe is in the episode SMG4: My Roommate Mario, where Luigi can be seen falling to the Mushroom Kingdom in space, showing him falling in the vicinity of Switzerland and Italy. However, in SMG4: Mario goes to the Dentist..., Swag and Tari is seen going to Mexico, which is located in North America. That contradicts the proof that the Mushroom Kingdom is located in Europe. It is possible that the Mushroom Kingdom may be an enclave or micronation, or off the coast of the United States. This is further proven in SMG4: Mario Goes To Ohio where Mario and Tari rode a cab to Ohio, implying that the Mushroom Kingdom is connected to the United States in a way.
    • The Mushroom Kingdom may have been under foreign powers and was ruled by a colony as a certain European country, which explains the appearance of the Declaration of Independence in MarioBusters.
    • The Mushroom Kingdom is not a member of the European Union, as they use their own currency and the EU logo is not visible on their license plates.
  • The Mushroom Kingdom could be a constitutional monarchy, as Tari has stated the word "President". But it could possibly be a former constitutional monarchy before converting into an absolute monarchy. This is further evident in an early video, where Toad ran for president for a day.
  • The Mushroom Kingdom is essentially confirmed to be a nuclear state, frequently using nuclear weapons and occasionally, nuclear power plants can be seen.
  • Tari is the only member of SMG4's Gang to not reside in the kingdom, as she is revealed to be living in Onett in SMG4: The Big Bad Bully.
  • SMG4: If Mario Was In... Sonic Movie 2 shows, that same-sex marriages (Or, at least, same-sex life partnerships.) is legal in MK.
  • According to SMG4: Mario The Supreme Leader, the death penalty is legal for certain crimes, and the sentenced are executed via guillotine.
  • According to SMG4: Welcome To Mario Mart™, the Mushroom Kingdom has regularly permissive gun laws, as shown in the 7-Eleven Mario was working at having a section selling guns. However, to purchase a gun in the Mushroom Kingdom, the customer needs to show identification, and any identification with false or outdated information will not be eligible for a purchase.
  • This is the place Mario was born at.
